Cathedrals have long been centers of sacred music, where the beauty of liturgical music enhances the worship experience and lifts the hearts of the faithful toward God. Our Cathedral is no exception to this rich tradition. We are privileged to have talented musicians who provide music for our Masses, with the organ as our primary instrument, filling the sacred space with the timeless sounds of our faith.
In addition to our regular liturgical music, the Cathedral also hosts the Cathedral Art Series, a series of recitals throughout the year that are open to the public for free. These recitals showcase a variety of musical talents and offer an opportunity for the community to experience the beauty of sacred music in a reverent setting. Occasionally, we also collaborate with other organizations to host concerts or recitals, some of which may have an entry fee. Through these events, we continue the historic connection between Cathedrals and sacred music, enriching both our parish and the wider community.
This year, we are thrilled to collaborate with the Sioux City Symphony and the Missouri River Choral Society to bring Handel's Messiah to the Cathedral of the Epiphany. This iconic and beloved oratorio will be performed on December 8, 2024, at 7:30 PM, filling our sacred space with the powerful and timeless music of one of the greatest works in the Western musical canon. George Frideric Handel composed Messiah in 1741, and it has since become one of the most celebrated choral works, especially during the Advent and Christmas seasons. The oratorio is renowned for its majestic choruses, including the famous "Hallelujah" chorus, and its profound reflection on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This performance at the Cathedral will be a unique opportunity to experience the grandeur and spiritual depth of Messiah in a setting that enhances its sacred themes.
The Sioux City Symphony, known for its exceptional performances and commitment to cultural enrichment, along with the Missouri River Choral Society, which brings together some of the finest choral voices in the region, will make this event an unforgettable experience. Their combined talents will ensure that this performance of Messiah resonates with both beauty and reverence, making it a highlight of the Cathedral’s musical offerings this year. We invite you to join us for this extraordinary evening of sacred music.
