The sacrament of baptism, according to Church teaching, is the first of the seven sacraments and the gateway to the other sacraments. It is through baptism that we are freed from original sin, reborn as children of God, and become members of the Body of Christ. The Church teaches that infants should be baptized as soon as possible after birth to ensure they receive the grace of this sacrament and begin their journey in the Christian faith without delay.
We at the Cathedral Parish are happy to celebrate the Baptism of your chidlren. We celebrate communal Baptisms in Spanish on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Baptisms in English and Latin (Post-Conciliar Rite) may be celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month.
Parents who wish to celebrate the Baptism of their children with us need to register as parishioners. Aditionaly, parents will need to attend a Reborn session in person or virtually. Parents who are visiting from other parishes will need to present a letter from their pastor granting us permission to celebrate the sacrament.
The role of godparents "is together with the parents to present the child for baptism, and to help it to live a christian life befitting the baptised and faithfully to fulfil the duties inherent in baptism." (CIC 872) Therefore, when choosing godparents for your child, make sure they live according to what the Church teaches. In practical terms, they need to be over 18 years old, they must have completed the three sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist), they must be practicing their faith, they must adhere to the Church's teaching on marriage, and they cannot be the parents of the child. You may have one or two godparents, in which case one has to be a man, and the other a woman. Parishioners who wish to be godparents must prove they are active, as verified by their contribution of time, talent, and treasure, while visitors will need to provide a letter from their pastor.
