| Youth Group |

What is the purpose of the Youth Group?
The youth group at the Cathedral of the Epiphany does not replace Religious Education in parishes, schools or at home. Rather, it is an opportunity to grow deeper in the Catholic faith. This deepening of faith does not take place in a classroom setting but in a new and unique context. The Sunday youth group meets a few times each month for social activities in order to build up a community of young Catholics, to pray, to learn from the examples of the Saints, to discuss the life of a Saint and to participate in various liturgical celebrations: Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction, as well as Liturgy of the Hours. If you are looking for an opportunity to take what you have learned in religion class and go deeper, youth group is for you.
Who is the youth group for?
The youth group is for individuals in 6th-12th grade. Although they are together for presentations, prayer and activities, they are separated for small groups into Jr. High and High School.
What is the format of the Youth Group?
The nights usually run from 6-8pm on select Sundays. It begins with an ice breaker to help youth meet one another. Then the youth gather for the story of a particular Saint. After this ten minute presentation the youth break into small groups to discuss their thoughts on the Saint and how they can learn from them. Next, there is an opportunity for some kind of activity that allows the teens to socialize, make Catholic friends and get something to eat. We conclude the night with either Eucharistic Adoration or Liturgy of the Hours.
Where is youth group held?
For the most part our Sunday events are held in the Epiphany Center on 10th and Douglas across from the Cathedral.
Can non-Catholics attend?
Non-Catholics are always welcome. We ask for respect and openness. Youth group is not a time for debating but for growing in holiness. Any theological questions should be reserved for afterwards or perhaps in small group discussions.
Can non-Cathedral families attend?
We do not turn away anyone as long as they are in 6th-12th grade and are open to God’s grace. In the past we have had youth from all school systems in Siouxland (public, private and homeschool) as well as from three dioceses: Omaha Archdiocese, Sioux Falls Diocese and Sioux City Diocese. Ultimately we have had kids from 12 different parishes.
Does the youth group do anything outside of Sundays?
The youth group gets asked to do dozens of things every month but we cannot do it all. This year the youth group will be having its own retreats and lock-ins, some Pro-life activities such as March for Life in Washington D.C., participation in the Fall Diocesan Youth Rally and Spring Net Rally, monthly breakfasts and holy hours.
How can I help?
To help contact Brandon Harvey whose information is below. There are numerous ways to help the program:
1. Volunteer as a Core Member, much like a chaperone, once a month. You come to youth group and help with items you are comfortable with.
2. Donate snacks once a month.
3. Come to our holy hour each month to pray for the holiness of our youth.
4. Financially contribute to help youth in financial need to attend our numerous trips and retreats each year.
