The hand-carved statue of the Blessed Mother depicts Mary holding the Christ in her lap. She offers the child a pomegranate, a symbol of His coming passion and a foretelling of the mystical Body of Christ. Mary's garment is adorned with snakes because the Lakota and Dakota word Sioux means snakes. A brooch depicting the crest of the Diocese of Sioux City holds Mary's mantle. The statue of the Blessed Mother was carved in the studios of
Conrad Moroder in Ortisei, Italy.
