What is the purpose of the Youth Group?

The youth group at the Cathedral of the Epiphany does not replace Religious Education in parishes, Catholic schools or at home education. Rather, it is an opportunity to grow deeper in the Catholic faith. This deepening of faith does not take place in a classroom setting but in a new and unique context. The youth group meets a few times each month for social activities in order to build up a community of young Catholics, to pray, to learn something new about the faith, to ask questions and to participate in various liturgical celebrations: Mass, Confession, Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction, as well as Liturgy of the Hours. If you are looking for an opportunity to take what you have learned in religion class and go deeper, youth group is for you. While religion class focuses on catechesis the youth group focuses on evangelization. Evangelization helps to fall in love with the person you learn about in class- Jesus Christ.

What is the format of the Youth Group?
The average youth group night includes ice breakers, a meal, a 10mn presentation, questions and answers on the presentation, a fun activity and  liturgy.

Where is youth group held?
Our events are held in the Epiphany Center on 10th and Douglas across from the Cathedral Church.

Can non-Catholics attend?
Non-Catholics are always welcome. We ask for respect and openness. Youth group is not a time for debating but for growing in holiness. Any theological questions should be reserved for afterwards or perhaps in small group discussions.

Can non-Cathedral families attend?
We do not turn away anyone as long as they are in 6th-12th grade and are open to God’s grace. In the past we have had youth from all school systems in Siouxland (public, private and homeschool) as well as from three dioceses: Omaha Archdiocese, Sioux Falls Diocese and Sioux City Diocese. Ultimately we have had kids from 12 different parishes. The Cathedral is the mother parish of all Catholics in the diocese and is the center of Catholicism in the region. Therefore participation in Cathedral events is not only welcomed but encouraged.

Does the youth group do anything outside of Sundays?
The youth group hosts retreats, does activities with the leadership group, and takes trips throughout the country. Past trips have included the March for Life, Benedictine Catholic Youth Conference, and One Bread One Cup.
